YANGON, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A health project of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 12 Myanmar towns bordering Mekong region is underway as part of the Mekong region health project, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports on Thursday.

The 12 Myanmar towns border Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand.

The AMR control activities, being carried out with a loan of 12 million U.S. dollars from the Asian Development Bank, aims to curb the spread of antimicrobial resistance among migrant workers and the ethnic minorities, according to an official of the National Health Laboratory.

The AMR project was initiated in December 2017 and the control activities began in early 2018.

Myanmar's health department is working to monitor and reduce the outbreak of communicable diseases, raising awareness on prevention methods, upgrading the laboratory and providing medical care to suspected patients.
