ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced on Friday it has agreed with its Kenyan counterpart to establish a joint peace committee along the two countries' common border.

In a press statement, MoFA said the agreement to establish a joint peace committee was reached on Friday at the end of a three-day joint border commission meeting held in Adama city, Ethiopia.

"The joint peace committee will help facilitate peaceful political, social and economic interaction with communities living along the Ethiopia-Kenya border," said the statement.

The joint peace committee will include government officials and local elders from both countries who will oversee peace initiatives along the Ethiopia-Kenya border areas.

Despite increasing economic ties between the two east African countries, the Ethiopia-Kenya border areas have persistently suffered from chronic insecurity caused by ethnic clashes and banditry.
