YANGON, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The crack at a dam in Myanmar's Bago region poses no risk to public safety following several earthquakes that jolted Paukkaung, Bago region last year, Myanmar News Agency reported Sunday quoting an initial assessment of the Myanmar Dams National Committee.

The crack at the earthen embankment of the Taungnawin Dam, which is 30 meters long, 0.08 meters wide and 0.9 meters in depth, was developed after several earthquakes struck near the dam area at magnitudes of 3.8, 5.1, 4.5 and 3.7 last year, said U Aung Zaw Min, assistant director of the Irrigation and Water Utilization and Management Department.

After local and foreign experts inspected the crack, Paukkaung authorities asked residents not to worry, saying there is currently no risk of the dam collapsing.

The Taungnawin Dam was built in 1995 to irrigate 23,189 hectares of farmland in Paukkaung township which lies in Pyay District in the Bago Region of Myanmar.
