11 killed after truck hits passenger vehicle in India

          NEW DELHI, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed and few others injured after a tanker truck collided with a passenger vehicle in western Indian state of Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday.

          The accident took place Monday night in Yavatmal, about 685 km east of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra.

          "Last night at around 10:00 p.m. (local time) we came to know that a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker truck hit a passenger vehicle on Yavatmal-Kalamb road," a police official posted in Yavatmal told Xinhua.

          "Eleven people were killed and few others injured in the tragic accident," the police official said.

          According to officials, the injured were removed to the Kalamb hospital.

          Police officials said the victims were local residents from Pardi village who returned after attending an engagement ceremony at Umarsara area of Yavatmal.

          Police have ordered an investigation into the accident.

          Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
