ANKARA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Turkey has been told that it will receive a waiver from the U.S. oil sanctions against Iran, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Donmez said Friday.

"According to information we received, Turkey will be among the eight countries allowed by the U.S. to continue importing Iranian oil, but we have no further details yet," Donmez told reporters at parliament.

"I think this outcome will contribute to peace and stability in the region," he said.

Earlier in the day, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said eight countries will be exempted temporarily if they continue importing Iranian oil after the penalties take effect.

Turkey depends heavily on oil imports and almost nearly half of its oil needs are imported from Iran.

U.S. sanctions on Iran's oil sector are set to come into effect on Nov. 5, after U.S. President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal in May.
