LILONGWE, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Malawi will host the African Regional training for Ombudsman institutions which have been designed to enhance promotion and enforcement of professional discipline among workers of the participating countries' public sector.

The regional forum has attracted participation of at least 70 international delegates from 24 countries across Africa, and will be held in Malawi's capital Lilongwe from 5 to 9 February, 2018.

Addressing local journalists in Lilongwe Thursday, Malawi's Ombudsman who is also Director of African Ombudsman Institute, Martha Mwangonde, explained that the training has also been designed to empower Ombudsman institutions on how they can enhance good governance in their respective governments.

Mwangonde explained: "The aim of the training is to build and enhance good governance and accountability through information sharing, benchmarking and integrating various aspects of the work of the Ombudsman."

She added that the participants would also discuss ways of strengthening and re-aligning the Ombudsman in a changing African environment, and forge partnerships and coalitions among Ombudsman institutions, and other relevant stakeholders for effective promotion of transparency and accountability.

She went on to disclose that the training had also attracted participation from outside Africa saying the Ombudsman of Bermuda had also expressed interest to be among the participants.

"I am also proud to announce that the President of International Ombudsman Institute who is also Ombudsman of Ireland, Peter Tyndall, will also be in attendance," disclosed Mwangonde.

The training will be facilitated by Professor Victor Ayeni of the Governance and Management Services International in the United Kingdom and there will also be presentations by the Danish Ombudsman and the Government Accountability Office from the United States of America.

It has been co-funded by Malawi Government through the Office of the Ombudsman; European Union; and African Ombudsman Research Center which is a research arm of African Ombudsman and Mediators Association.
