U.S. dollar declines on slower economic growth

          NEW YORK, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- U.S. dollar declined in late trading on Friday after data showed slower U.S. economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2017.

          The U.S. economy grew 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017, lower than the 3.2 percent in the previous quarter, the Commerce Department said Friday.

          The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, decreased 0.38 percent to 89.047 at 3:00 p.m. (2000 GMT).

          In late New York trading, the euro increased to 1.2421 dollars from 1.2394 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound climbed to 1.4157 dollars from 1.4124 dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar edged up to 0.8119 dollar from 0.8021 dollar.

          The dollar bought 108.67 Japanese yen, lower than 109.42 yen of the previous session. The dollar decreased to 0.9353 Swiss franc from 0.9425 Swiss franc, and it was down to 1.2320 Canadian dollars from 1.2364 Canadian dollars.
