KIGALI, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda received 137 asylum-seekers evacuated from Libya late Wednesday, according to the ministry in charge of emergency management.
The latest batch of asylum-seekers to arrive in Rwanda includes individuals from Eritrea, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, but most of them are from Sudan, the ministry said in a statement.
The evacuees will be temporarily hosted at the Gashora transit center in eastern Rwanda, from where they will wait for processing to be relocated to other countries.
The evacuation to Rwanda is done under a 2019 memorandum of understanding Rwanda signed with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the African Union, under which a transit mechanism was set up to provide lifesaving protection, assistance and long-term solutions to vulnerable individuals trapped in Libya.
Since 2019, 2,760 individuals have been evacuated, with over 2,100 already resettled to third countries, according to the latest UNHCR data. ■
