ULAN BATOR, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia has decided to provide 100,000 U.S. dollars in humanitarian aid to Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.

Mongolian Foreign Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar on Monday met with Masato Takaoka, Japanese ambassador to Mongolia, in Ulan Bator and informed him about the government's decision.

The downpours since July 5 triggered massive flooding and hundreds of landslides in western Japan, claiming over 220 lives, according to Japanese authorities.

Tens of thousands of homes across the stricken area have been damaged in the country's worst flooding and landslide disaster in decades, with thousands remaining homeless.

Officials and experts from the Asia-Pacific region met in Ulan Bator to discuss measures to reduce disaster risks just a few days before the disaster in Japan occurred, mentioned Tsogtbaatar.

"We feel deep sorrow for those who have died, and for the sorrow of the family members of people who died," he said.?
