SYDNEY, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Australian think tank Lowy Institute said on Wednesday that trust in the United States has fallen to its lowest level in its polling history.

The independent think tank, based in New South Wales state capital Sydney, said in a statement that most Australians have little confidence in U.S. President Donald Trump, according to its poll.

The nuclear program of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and terrorism were viewed as "critical threats to the vital interests of Australia" in the next decade, the institute said.

More than half of those polled also thought of China as the "world's leading economic power," reflecting Australians' perception of the world's second-largest economy as a "global economic powerhouse" and their embrace of the country as an economic partner, according to the institute.

The poll also showed that most Australians say the number of migrants heading to the country are too high, signaling a spike in anti-immigration sentiment.
